Henderson named women’s basketball coach at PHCC

Brian Henderson is the new head coach of PHCC’s women’s basketball team.

Brian Henderson has been named head coach of the women’s basketball team at Patrick Henry Community College, and J.R. Reid will join his staff as an assistant coach.

Henderson holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Sports Management from Virginia State University and has extensive experience in coaching basketball at Virginia State University, Petersburg High School and George Washington High School.

“Brian brings a wealth of experience to the athletic department at PHCC,” said Chris Parker, PHCC’s athletic director. “His background on the court, in the classroom and in working with youth will help round out the women’s program and create a rewarding experience for the players.”

Henderson served as interim head coach of the boys basketball team at G.W. Danville last season. He also was an assistant men’s basketball coach at VSU from 2007-2010. As a player at VSU from 2002-2007, Henderson started three years and served as a team captain for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

He has coordinated and led programs designed to provide motivation and enrichment to youth, including his most recent position as teen director of the Boys and Girls Club of Danville. Other positions have included program coordinator of YESS for Danville Public Schools; program director of Project Rise in Ettrick, Virginia; and central Virginia area manager for Pyxis, Inc.

Additionally, Henderson has teaching experience at both the high school and college levels.

Reid, a first-year assistant coach for the men’s team last season, will also serve as an assistant to Henderson on the women’s team. Reid, an all-American at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an 11-year NBA veteran, won a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic team. A Virginia Beach native, Reid played from 1986-89 for Dean Smith before being drafted fifth overall by the Charlotte Hornets. This will be Reid’s second season with the men’s team.

J.R. Reid will serve as an assistant on the men’s and women’s basketball teams at PHCC this season.

“J.R. Reid will be a great asset to coach Henderson’s Lady Patriots,” said Parker. “J.R. has been taught by some of the best coaches of all-time, and he’s got a playing background that’s second to none. We’re excited to have him coaching both basketball teams at PHCC.”

Henderson succeeds Tony Jones, who served as head basketball coach of the Lady Patriots for the past three and a half years. Jones, who led PHCC to the 2009 NJCAA national championship game in Peoria, Ill., is pursuing other opportunities.

“PHCC appreciates the contributions Tony made in developing the women’s basketball program. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” Parker said.
